GET INSPIRED AT THE QUARRY

by Martine Rolls

Te Puna Quarry Park is a truly magical place. The park is well known for its amazing sculptures, picnic spots and tranquil walking paths, but the Quarry is also an ideal venue for open-air events and concerts.  For this summer, there is plenty to look forward to.

There is a lot to happen over summer at the Quarry. It starts off early December with Carols at the Quarry to get into the spirit of Christmas, and this is followed by poetry, improvised theatre, open air movies, classics, horror, and Rock on the Rocks. It’s a great mix of entertainment with something for everyone.

“There are some really exciting events to look forward to at the Quarry in the next couple of months and we invite everyone to come and enjoy this,” says Beth Bowden, one of the trustees of the Te Puna Summer Trust. The Trust is a small voluntary organisation that assists and supports creative people who would like to use Te Puna Quarry as a performing space.

“With its natural amphitheatre and fabulous natural acoustics, the Quarry just cries out for musical and theatre events”, says Beth. “The Trust exists to offer support, advice and information to anyone who would like to organise an event at the Quarry. If you have an artistic impulse and a great idea that would fit the location, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We can help you make it happen!”

“Our organisation strongly encourages new ideas, and we’d love for you to have a go. The Trust is there to help with the organisation of the details, from port-a-loos and wet weather planning through to marketing and security, so you can fully focus on your event and performance.”

Beth, who is a well-known performer and singer herself, has strong ties with Te Puna and a heart for the local performing arts community. “The Quarry is for everybody to enjoy. It has true spirit, and the more creativity in this wonderful location, the better”, she says.

Once again, the Quarry will host Theatre Sports during Anniversary Weekend. It’s an opportunity for actors and performers to come and entertain the audience with wacky comedy theatre, unusual props; pretty much anything goes. The message is: improvise in the open air, stretch yourself, and be competitive. As an added bonus, there are some great prizes to be won.

“The venue can hold up to 1000 people, but parking spaces are limited and it’s important to us to respect the environment, so we encourage people to carpool when coming to our events”, says Beth. “We are in the process of organising a bus service for the main events too, so it’ll be even easier to get here.”

If you would like more information or want to purchase tickets for one of the events, just check the community board at the Quarry entrance or keep an eye on the ‘What’s on guides’ in the local papers and announcements on local radio stations.
